Helmsley’s Type 1 Diabetes Program: Understanding and Therapeutically Emulating Examples Where Individuals Are Naturally Protected From Developing T1D (Concept Note)

seeks to support studies that aim to understand and/or therapeutically emulate natural protection from T1D.

Of specific interest are research plans that include:

• Understanding genetic protection from T1D (e.g., HLA-DQB1*06:02);
• Understanding maternal protection from T1D (any factor from mothers with T1D that protect their offspring from T1D);
• Understanding other examples of natural protection from T1D that are amenable to scientific study; and
• Developing or validating preclinical or clinical therapies to prevent or delay T1D that mimic aspects of natural protection.

Funding: Requested funding amounts will range based on activities but should not exceed $3 million over three years.
