The European Commission has published new calls for proposals for ERC (European Research Council). The European ERC Advanced Grant is highly prestigious and aims to support excellent research projects by leading investigators.
Proposals should involve innovative methodologies, whose high risk is justified by the possibility of a major breakthrough with an impact beyond a specific research domain/discipline.
Theme: Physical Sciences & Engineering
Budget and duration:
Normally, the maximum grant will be 2,500,000€ for a period of 5 years (pro rata for projects of shorter duration). However, an additional 1,000,000€ can be made available to cover (a) eligible “start-up” costs for Principal Investigators moving from a third country to the EU or an associated country, (b) 'Co-Investigator projects' and/or (c) the purchase of major equipment.
Eligible Researchers:
Active researchers who are Exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions in the last 10 years:
1. Minimum of 10 publications as senior author in major international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals, and/or in the leading international peer-reviewed journals of their respective field.
OR
2. Minimum of 3 major research monographs, of which at least one is translated into another language. This benchmark is relevant to research fields where publication of monographs is the norm (e.g. humanities and social sciences).
OR
3. Other alternative benchmarks that may be considered (individually or in combination) as indicative of an exceptional record and recognition in the last 10 years (if applicable):
1. 5 granted patents
2. 10 invited presentations in well-established internationally organised conferences and advanced schools
3. 3 research expeditions led by the applicant
4. 3 well-established international conferences or congresses where the applicant was involved in their organisation as a member of the steering and/or organising committee
5. International recognition through scientific prizes/awards or membership in well-regarded Academies
Restrictions:
The following rules should be seriously taken into consideration before deciding on submission:
• No Principal Investigator who has submitted an eligible proposal to the 2011 call may apply to the following 2012 call, unless the proposal was evaluated above the quality threshold during the 2nd step but not funded due to insufficient available budget.
• A Principal Investigator associated with an eligible proposal for an ERC-Advanced Grant to either of the 2009/ 2010 calls may not apply for the 2011 call unless the eligible proposal to the first or second call has met the quality threshold on both evaluation criteria at the end of step 1 of the evaluation.
• A Principal Investigator may manage only one active ERC grant at a time.
• No Principal Investigator (and/or a co-investigator in an Advanced Grant) may be associated with more than one application to the ERC during the same year.
