Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) - Information as Fuel - (IaF) – initial proposal

IaF seeks research that provides new insights into fundamental aspects of reality through experimentation in the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of information. It is anticipated that the experiments will need simultaneous but independent measurements of the evolution of thermodynamics and of information processing in a given system. Experimental approaches or methods that investigate how information may act as a kind of fuel are especially interesting. However, research on any of the topics listed hereafter, or closely related, may be supported by the program:

• Autonomous Maxwell demons
• Computing beyond the Landauer limit
• Information engines
• Experimental Landauer erasure of a quantum state
• Quantum Szilard engine
• Information as fuel in biology
• Insights into fundamental philosophical aspects of entropy and information using the (in)distinguishability of particles

Funding: on average $500,000-$2,500,000 over 3 years.
