The Good Food Institute (GFI): Development of plant-based and clean meat products

Aim: to support research designed to advance plant-based meat product and/or technology development in one or more of the areas depicted in RFP.

Examples of specific areas of interest include but are not limited to:

• Characterization of novel sources of plant-based ingredients suitable for plant-based meat ● Optimization of raw materials used as ingredients for plant-based meat, including fats, binders, and flavors as well as proteins
• Optimization or development of processing methods for plant cell disruption, protein isolation, and ingredient functionalization (among others) to improve the texture and taste of plant-based meat
• Development of non-extrusion methods for structuring plant proteins and making plant-based meat products

Funding: up to $250,000 for 2 years (10% overhead)

Clean meat RFP:

All project proposals should be developed with an eye toward accelerating the commercialization of appetizing and affordable clean meat products using materials, processes, and technologies that require 5 minimal natural resource and energy utilization and that can be scaled to commercially relevant volumes/

Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to:

• Development of simple and low-cost methods for generating stable cell lines for agriculturally-relevant species and maximizing the growth efficiency of these lines
• Optimization of cell culture media formulations and media monitoring and recycling systems
• Design of edible scaffolding materials to facilitate the production of thick cuts of meat
• Creation of scalable culturing platforms that enable growth and differentiation of multiple cell types (muscle, fat, etc.) simultaneously

Funding: up to $250,000 for 2 years (10% overhead)
