Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Helmsley Charitable Trust: Seed Networks (CZI) / Gut Cell Atlas (Helmsley)

The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) is a global effort with the ambitious goal to create a reference map of all cell types in the human body and generate a fundamental guide for biomedical research.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and the Helmsley Charitable Trust (Helmsley) are pleased to announce continued support for the Human Cell Atlas (HCA) by collaborating on two new funding mechanisms that will continue the work of the HCA community both accessed through this single application portal.

CZI seeks to continue the work of the HCA community with a focus on interdisciplinary work and collaboration through the formation of 3-year Seed Networks. Seed Networks aim to solidify growth of the community and promote the integration of experimental and computational research to accelerate progress toward a first draft of several organs. Additionally, newly formed Networks are designed to catalyze partnerships among the scientific and funding communities so that we can work together toward a first draft of the HCA.

Helmsley’s Crohn’s Disease Program, committed to improving the lives of Crohn’s patients while pursuing a cure, seeks applications from principal investigators that will contribute collectively to creating a Gut Cell Atlas, cataloging the many cell types in the small and large intestines. The reference map of the gut will allow us to understand development, health, and disease, and be a foundation for the discovery of new and effective treatments for Crohn’s disease and other intestinal pathologies. This collaborative effort will serve as a model for the HCA community for building other comprehensive organ system atlases.
