The Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi): Agency in the Physical World (Initial Proposals)

FQXi supports research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology, new frontiers and innovative ideas integral to a deep understanding of reality, but unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources.

The current RFP targets research on 'Agency in the Physical World', both in physics and also in related fields including cosmology, astrophysics, philosophy of physics, complex systems, biophysics, neuroscience, computer science, and mathematics.  'Agency in the Physical World' hopes to inspire the drawing of deep connections from the most fundamental descriptions in physics and cosmology, to description in terms of agency, intelligence, and consciousness within our physical theories. How do we define these notions? How do they arise – and are they fundamental or emergent? How do they interact with each other and with other fundamental aspects of our physical theories.  Funding: A total of $1.2M will be available.  Awards will be in average of $100K over up to 2 years.
