Physical Systems: leading edge experimental and/or theoretical research that explores scientific boundaries and advances our understanding of physics, chemistry, and materials science to generate unique capability for U.S. national security.

Mathematics, Modeling, and Design: development and implementation of advanced mathematics and modeling tools for applications of interest to U.S. national security.

Human-Machine Systems: development of a fundamental understanding of human-technology system dynamic to analyze and assess a wide variety of critical systems – factories, defense systems, human innovation systems –by radically magnifying the capabilities of people to respond to increasingly complex problems.
