The French Muscular Dystrophy Association (AFM-Téléthon): Research in Neuromuscular Diseases

- Scientific Call: Funds fundamental research projects and physiopathology of diseases of the neuromuscular system, and development of therapeutic approaches for rare diseases, such as gene and/or cell therapy for rare disorders, strategies for modifying gene expression both at the gene and RNA level, pharmacotherapies of neuromuscular diseases, and translational research. They pay special attention to projects on smooth muscles in neuromuscular diseases and projects on physiopathology or therapeutic approaches for myofibrillar myopathies.
- Medical Call: Funds clinical projects aimed to improve the management of patients, the knowledge of the disease and its progression, and quality of life of patients affected by neuromuscular disease especially in these areas: pneumology, cardiology, orthopedics, nutrition, urology and stomatology / usual care study / pain management / cognitive and psychological domains / patient databases / evaluation of muscle strength / assessment study on effectiveness of a therapeutic patient’s education program / care procedure assessment / medical device’s test / non-drug treatments / diagnostic criteria/diagnostic algorithm.
Types of funding for each call
• Trampoline grant: 50,000 Euros for one year.
• Renewable research projects for 2-3 years.
• Post-doc fellowship: one year – renewable for one year
• PhD fellowship: one year but renewable for 2-3 years
