American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - AFSP: Various Research Grants

AFSP funds innovative research in all areas related to suicide. In an effort to stimulate research in understudied areas, we select priority areas for funding. Priority area research applications are reviewed along with the general pool of grant applications, with priority given to the designated areas. We aim to fund at least one to two priority area grants among those awarded in each cycle. While we encourage applications in our priority areas, we also encourage and welcome all applications related to preventing suicide. AFSP Priority Areas for 2013–14 are Anxiety Disorders or Alcohol and Other Substance Use Disorders. These disorders may be studied alone or in combination with other disorders.
- Distinguished Investigator Grants: for investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide (up to $100,000 over 2 years).
- Standard Research Grants: for investigators at any level (up to $90,000 over 2 years).
- Linked Standard Research Grants: for investigators at any level performing research involving 3 or more unique sites (up to $225,000 over 2 years).
- Young Investigator Grants: for investigators at or below the level of assistant professor (up to $85,000 over 2 years).
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., within the preceding 6 years and have had no more 3 years of fellowship support (up to $104,000 over 2 years).
- Pilot Grants: for investigators at any level, these grants provide seed funding for new projects that have the potential to lead to larger investigations. These grants typically entail feasibility studies rather than hypothesis-driven research (up to $30,000 over 1-2 years).
