European Chemical Industry Council (cefic): Long-range Research Initiative in Chemical Hazards

* Eye irritation testing in vitro in practice – Database and testing strategy - This project is looking to establish a substantial data base of in vitro eye irritation/severe eye irritation tests for chemicals with reliable, existing in vivo data. Funding €500,000 over 1 year.

*Use of Ecosystem Services in Targeting Risk Assessment of Chemicals in the Environment ­ Objective: to facilitate engagement of the chemical industry, academia and regulators to help develop and evaluate the ES approach in guiding risk assessment schemes for any type of xenobiotic chemical. Funding €300,000 over 2 years

*Improving assessment of persistency through including adaptation; standardize methodology and assess ecological significance – Objective: Review examples of microbial adaptation in response to chemical exposure, assess the importance of adaptation with respect to environmental persistence, develop exposure methodologies to test substance under environmentally relevant test conditions. Funding €600,000 over 3-4 years.

* Mining data (bases) to expand the domain of applicability of chemical activity – Objective: to evaluate databases for the potential to expand the domain of applicability of chemical activity including but not limited to other, i.e. non-baseline toxicity modes of action, develop approaches/strategies for utilizing acute and chronic data of lesser quality, and determine chemical activities cluster in large in vitro data sets Funding €150,000 over 1.5-2 years.
