BIRAX: Regenerative Medicine Initiative, Britain-Israel collaboration - Preliminary Proposals

The BIRAX Regenerative Medicine Initiative will fund ground-breaking research that:
1. Explores the use of stem cell technology and tissue engineering in the context of fundamental disease processes;
2. Discovers new mechanisms that might be targeted to develop novel regenerative therapies; or
3. Advances understanding of stem cell biology, using lessons learnt from developing tissues and organs, or the mechanisms underlying cell fate and the principles of cellular pluripotency for the development of stem cell-based therapies.
We want to fund research collaborations in a wide spectrum of approaches, including biological, chemical and material sciences relevant to Regenerative Medicine, and both basic and translational research.
Call for specific proposals: In addition to this general call we welcome research proposals with particular focus on cardiovascular diseases, Type-1 diabetes and neurodegenerative conditions as set out below. Proposals in these areas may receive funding - wholly or partially – from one of our partners. Applications in these areas may benefit from discussing the research priorities of our partners.
* Cardiovascular disease: The application of regenerative therapies toward the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. We welcome research in the class of diseases that involve the heart, the blood vessels or both. Funding for this strand may come from our partner, the British Heart Foundation. * Type 1 Diabetes: Regeneration of beta cells and the prevention of their immune-mediated destruction, maintaining the survival of extant and newly generated beta cells. Funding for this strand may come from our partner, JDRF. See their priorities at www.jdrf.org.
* Neurodegenerative conditions: 1- The role of stem cell technology in understanding fundamental neurodegenerative processes; 2- New mechanisms targeted at developing novel therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease.
