BARD Multinational Agricultural R&D Program (MARD): Facilitating Grant program for regional cooperation in agricultural R&D

BARD established the MARD program to promote cooperative agricultural R&D activities between scientists in Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority and the US. MARD activities are focused on priority areas that address pressing agricultural problems in the Middle East. MARD encourages FG proposals related to animal and plant stress physiology under extreme weather conditions and global warming, in order to ensure safe and productive agricultural systems. It also encourages proposals related to plant and animal production, plant and animal diseases, soil and water related research associated with food production, irrigation and water quality issues, food quality and safety, and technology transfer and capacity building. The program aims to enable multinational research groups to jointly prepare research proposals, which will be submitted for funding to other international granting agencies, and to fund preliminary research that would strengthen such proposals when applying to international agencies. Teams should consist of representatives from all 4 nations – The Palestinian Authority (PA), Jordan, Israel and the US. Investigators from other Arab nations may also participate when preparing a proposal for MERC, USAID, DFG or similar funding agencies that require participation of such nations. Under special circumstances BARD may consider proposals submitted by representatives from Jordan, the PA and Israel only, or from Jordan and Israel or the PA and Israel only. Funding: up to $20K for meetings, and up to $50K when a research component is included. Funding is for one year.
