BIRAX - The Britain Israel Research and Academic Exchange Partnership: PhD and PostDoc Fellowships in Regenerative Medicine

The BIRAX Regenerative Medicine Initiative is launching a fellowship scheme which will support research visits by UK / Israel researchers for up to 6 months to laboratories in the UK / Israel. Regenerative Medicine is focusing on the replacement or regeneration of human cells, tissue or organs, aiming at the restoration of normal function, based on a broad spectrum of fields in modern biology – including studies conducted at the molecular, cellular and system levels. The supported fields of research include but are not restricted to:

1. Developmental biology related to regenerative medicine, using lessons learnt from developing tissues and organs on the mechanisms underlying cell fate regulation, for the generation and application of novel regenerative strategies.

2. Stem cell biology related to cell therapy – ranging from a basic understanding of the principles of cellular pluripotency to the development of stem cell-based therapies, including but not limited to Stem Cells - Transplantation Immunology and Manufacture and Stem Cell Derivation, Genomics, and Genomic Reprogramming and Epigenetics.

3. Development of diverse Cell Therapy approaches – including both haematopoeitic and non haematopoeitic systems.

4. Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Engineering that combine biological, chemical and material sciences; innovations that enable the restoration of tissue function.

5. Use of novel gene replacement technologies for therapeutic purposes.

6. Endogenous Repair – stimulating self-repair mechanisms to promote cell or tissue regeneration.
