DOD-CDMRP: Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research Program - Pre-Application

The intent of this mechanism is to: * Promote new ideas with the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation to further the research field; * Advance knowledge on the theoretical construct surrounding TBI to increase scientific understanding of certain phenomena; * Propose new paradigms or challenging existing paradigms; * Address technical feasibility of promising new devices, behavioral and rehabilitation interventions, therapeutic techniques, clinical guidance, or emerging approaches and technologies.

Applications must specifically address the Translation/Clinical Research Area: Development of interventions or therapies to protect and/or restore neuronal function following TBI in the acute (1st week), subacute (>1 week to 3 months), and chronic (≥ 3 months from time of injury) phases of care.

Applications should be designed to: * Provide objective evidence of induction of structural and functional changes in the brain following TBI that correlate with functional outcomes; * Maximize functional outcomes, and define the mechanisms involved in the structural and functional improvements; * Validate methods to objectively assess structural and functional recovery.

Funding: up to $3 million for clinical studies including clinical trials, and up to $1 million for applied and or mechanistic studies. The maximum period of performance is 3 years. Approximately 3 clinical studies and 3 applied and/or mechanistic (preclinical) studies will be awarded.
