Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF)-AACR: Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research

Proposals of $250,000 over 2 years will be accepted for new innovative approaches that have direct relevance to Carcinoid Tumors (CT) and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (PNT). Proposed projects can be in any discipline including basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological research. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research who have promising idea that they will apply to CT or PNT.
Recent publication of an exome sequencing study of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors identified DAXX and ATRX as common genetic mutations among PNT. The authors also found that the majority of tumors sequenced harbored mutations in genes (DAXX, ATRX or MEN1) involved in chromatin remodeling. In particular, CFCF is eager to attract investigators who have powerful experimental tools to study the role of these mutations and epigenetics in neuroendocrine tumor development. A track record of specific research in neuroendocrine tumors is NOT a requirement for funding. There are 2 areas in which CFCF is particularly interested:
* Creation of Transgenic Mouse Models to Study the Effects of DAXX and ATRX Mutations – CFCF does not believe a conditional knockout mouse to study the effects of DAXX and ATRX mutations currently exists.
* Epigenetic Studies – Mutations in chromatin remodeling genes DAXX, ATRX and MEN1 have been found in PNT. CFCF is interested in projects that will delineate the role of epigenetic processes in neuroendocrine tumor development..
